About the Recreation Area
Garden of the Gods Recreation Area is one of southern Illinois’ best-known scenic destinations. Located in Shawnee National Forest , it features sculpted sandstone formations and overlooks of the surrounding Shawnee Hills.
Visitors can explore the short Observation Trail, plan a longer woodland hike, enjoy a picnic, or stay at nearby Pharaoh Campground. The developed recreation area also provides access to trails associated with Garden of the Gods Wilderness.
Observation Trail
The approximately quarter-mile Observation Trail is the main scenic route for viewing the area’s well-known rock formations. Interpretive signs explain the landscape’s geological history.
The trail leads to bluff-top viewpoints overlooking the Shawnee Hills and Garden of the Gods Wilderness. Named formations include Camel Rock, Table Rock, and Devil’s Smokestack.
Surface & Walking Conditions
The route follows sandstone and flagstone surfaces and includes steps, uneven rock, and short, steep grades. The Forest Service brochure describes it as easy to moderate.
Allow approximately 30–60 minutes if you plan to pause at overlooks, take photographs, and read the interpretive signs.
A short distance does not mean a level or uniformly accessible trail. Use caution on uneven surfaces and around exposed bluff edges.

Longer Hiking Options
Garden of the Gods offers access to more than the short scenic trail. The Forest Service brochure lists 16.9 miles for the entire trail system and 1.6 miles for Indian Point Trail.
These figures describe different hiking options. They do not represent a single required loop beginning at the Observation Trail parking area.
Observation Trail, Indian Point Trail, portions of Anvil Rock Trail, and Trail 108H are designated hiker-only routes. Permitted uses vary elsewhere in the system.
Consult the official trail map before planning a longer outing. This guide does not provide a verified turn-by-turn route or downloadable GPS track.
