After changes to get the project within budget, the Parks Board awarded a contract Wednesday for construction of a new trail around the Garvin Park lake.
Use of a concrete designed to be used near trees without endangering them will bring the total project to $231,873, principal park planner Glenn Boberg told the board. Use of the special concrete allowed elimination of boardwalks from the project.
Boardwalks had originally been designed into the project to protect trees.
With a $10,000 contribution from the Evansville Parks Foundation, the project cost falls within the $220,000 to $230,000 window set when the project was advertised in April.
Evansville's Deig Bros. Lumber & Construction Co. was awarded the contract for the project at $228,873.
The city received $148,470 for the trail from the federal Recreational Trails Program, administered by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Deig workers are expected to move equipment into Garvin Park this week. Construction is expected to be completed by Nov. 15.
The roughly mile-long trail will hook up with the Pigeon Creek Greenway and follow, in part, paths worn by hikers.
The project is expected to end erosion danger on the paths.
Officially, the lake is known as Evansmeer Lake.
