Seasonal Appearance
The Common Loon has a large, heavy body and a thick, pointed bill. Its appearance changes between the breeding season and winter.
In breeding plumage, the head and neck are black, with white neck markings and white spots across the back.
In winter, the upperparts become dark gray, while the throat and underparts are white.
A Distinctive Wilderness Sound
The loon’s calls include haunting wails, laughing notes, and yodels. These striking sounds give the bird a memorable presence even when it is out of sight.
