About the Grounds

Evansville State Hospital is a psychiatric hospital founded in 1890 on Evansville’s east side. Like many of Indiana’s early state hospitals, it was established in an out-of-the-way location and designed as a peaceful, campus-like setting.

Although the original historic buildings have been demolished, the remaining grounds provide a peaceful park and recreational area for walking and enjoying the landscape.

Trail Information

The roughly one-third-mile walking path is a pleasant route through the hospital grounds. The newly graveled path helps connect the northwest trail that previously ended at the Lloyd Expressway.

News: Master Gardener Display Garden

The Southwestern Indiana Master Gardener Association is transforming a corner of the Evansville State Hospital property into a colorful garden space. The project includes about a dozen garden areas intended to educate and inspire visitors.

Richard Kincaid of the association is shown working in the vegetable garden beside an old log cabin. The 1.2-acre display garden donates all of its produce to the local food bank; in the year described in the original article, it produced 3,000 pounds of produce.
