Two walking experiences, one destination

Newman Park

Newman Park, officially listed as the Dr. William L. Newman Recreational Complex, is located at 1020 Sand Lane in Henderson, Kentucky. It combines sports facilities with a paved interpretive walking path and access to the Canoe Creek Nature Trail.

The interpretive path offers tree identification within the recreation complex, while the longer nature trails explore woodland and wetland habitat along Canoe Creek.

This destination is in Henderson, not Owensboro. Keep it under Henderson County in your regional trail directory.

Canoe Creek Nature Trail

The Canoe Creek Nature Trail follows the creek through woodland and wetland habitat. Henderson’s trail brochure describes an approximately 2.1-mile main trail with another mile of accessory trails offering additional exploration.

Small footbridges cross ditches and streams feeding Canoe Creek. Changes in elevation make the route a moderate hiking experience rather than a uniformly level park walk.

The trail provides opportunities to observe wetland plants and wildlife and includes access to an outdoor classroom intended for groups such as Scout troops and science students. Benches offer places to pause along the way.

Newman Park Interpretive Trail

A separate 2,700-foot asphalt walking trail runs between the park’s softball and soccer facilities. This shorter route combines exercise with tree identification, introducing visitors to the families, genera, and species represented by urban trees.

Keep this paved interpretive path distinct from the creekside nature trails. An asphalt path inside the park does not establish that the entire trail network is paved or accessible.

Bicycling & pets

The Henderson Tourist Commission describes the Canoe Creek trail network as mountain-bike- and pet-friendly.

Follow current signs and check with Henderson Parks and Recreation for permitted cycling routes and pet requirements. Do not assume that every path has the same use rules.

Understanding the trail distances

The city brochure separately describes a 2.1-mile main nature trail, approximately one mile of accessory trails, and a 2,700-foot paved interpretive path.

The tourism commission advertises a 4.2-mile network. These descriptions do not establish an identical route or a single loop of that length. Use a current trail map to select your outing rather than adding the figures together.
